COMSATS – Commission on science and technology for sustainable development in South is an inter-government organization, focused on a collaborative sustainable development effort of developing countries in Africa, America, Asia, Caribbean islands and Middle East. The concept to set up the commission was proposed to Pakistan government in 1994, by the late Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salam. Now 13 years later Comsats has a membership of 21 developing countries. The commission is funded by technical assistance from member contributions, the revenue raised from internet services and international development grants. Comsats HQ is located in Islamabad. The member countries are; Bangladesh, China, Colombia, Egypt, Ghana, Iran, Jamaica, Jordon, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Comsats was accredited under the United Nations Protocol, prior to UN World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, at Johannesburg. Comsats is engaged in other sectors of industry – Agriculture , Geology, Energy and the Information Technology. Current ICT products and services portfolio includes the Internet access services, Web based solutions, and technology competence training. Comsats is currently pursuing ITU-D Sector membership to become a permanent Sector member.
21ConceptConsult – is a German telecommunications consultants organization, affiliated to A-COMMS, and is based near Dusseldorf. 21ConceptConsult tracks trends in the evolving telecommunication networks and systems development. It Provides solutions for fixed as well as mobile networks. This includes GSM, UMTS, Wireless LAN, WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth and RFID. The organization undertakes planning of client’s radio networks. Provides supplier services to developing countries in association with A-COMMS, and participates in the systems evaluation, systems selection, bid management and the project management.
Towards a Wireless World
ITU endorses the industry view by highlighting that “There is enormous potential in new wireless technologies for communication. In particular, they could make major strides towards providing much needed access to information and communication technologies in remote and rural areas and in developing markets”
